Mini-bosses confine the player to a single room with limited time to heal before facing the next assault. Boss battles, however, span across multiple rooms, with players needing to stop and recover or use point-and-click mechanics to exploit the environment and weaken their foe. Inevitably, the player will sustain damage during these high-speed combat encounters, which can be healed by finding a safe spot, listening to their heartbeat and allowing their stamina to regenerate before pressing on. A standout feature is the collection of over 70 poems scattered throughout the game each varying in length tone, and rhyme scheme which players can add to their library.
